Oracle | Primavera Risk: Pertmaster Resources

The Oracle | Primavera Risk (Pertmaster) resource options can be found by clicking “Resources…” under the plan menu.  Primavera Risk allows resources to be imported from other scheduling tools or to be created manually.  Pertmaster calculates all cost based on resource units and rates.  The cost calculations for a cost estimate or schedule is always derived from the resource data.

Standard View Tab

The standard view is tab is setup like a spreadsheet.  The following columns are available:

  • ID, Description
  • Type – expenses, labor, materials, nonlabor, TEAM
  • Default Loading – back, front normal, spread
  • Cost (cost per unit)
  • Cost Uncertainty – none, distribution, escalating
  • Unit of Measure – manual entry field
  • Calendar – drop-down of all available calendars
  • Supply – constant, infinite, profile
  • Level – yes, no

The resources should all import from Primavera P3, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project if they exist.  It is important that the loading type is set properly to allow time to drive cost in a representative manner.  A spread cost will not increase as the durations increase or decrease.  Items, like materials, should be loaded as spread resources.  A normal loaded cost will increase or decrease based on time.  A daily or burn rate should be loaded as a normal cost.  It is common that costs are loaded as a lump sum in many planning and scheduling departments.  If normal and spread costs are not separated, then it could negatively impact or invalidate the results of cost data.

Advanced View Tab

Schedulers are able to assign sub-resources in the advanced tab.  The planner could setup a resource named “crew1” and the sub-resources could be 1 manager, 3 workers, and a 2 trucks.  This would allow users to assign the crew resource, instead of manually assigning the three sub-resources to an activity.

The PRC Enterprise Cost Risk Analysis is a customizable web-based solution for simulating estimate cost and determining cost contingency, cost drivers, and risk hotspots. The key to a good risk analysis is good inputs.  The software cannot be a roadblock to success. Good risk software should be easy on the end user. Monte Carlo simulation is already a complex.  The software should simplify the process.
